A Post #Sandy #NYC

Things have been a bit nuts here in the last week.  I can't believe its been a whole week since I've posted, but other things have been on my mind.  Like superstorms and millions of people being displaced from their homes in many states including my own.

While, our little family survived the storm with little more than the occasional flicker of the lights and the epic howling of the wind that sounded like a banshee screaming outside our apartment, others are dealing with loss of life, property and the basics we so easily take for granted.

I think the hardest part is the fact that so many people are hurting, more than can be reached right now by the Red Cross & Government programs - and the rest of the country could easily just go on their way about their own business and forget about the needs of the people here.

If its easy to remain comfortable in my bubble up in Washington Heights, how much easier in a part of the country that didn't face the storm?  I fear another Katrina - towns and cities decimated with only a small percentage of the country giving of their time and treasure to help.

New York is resilient but I also disagree with the attitudes of overconfidence and arrogance by many officials shown on the news - New Yorkers need help right now.  And the city and state is not able to match the need - which means the help has to come from elsewhere - and I think our city and state would do better tempering the "We can survive anything attitude" to the "We need your help - in some ways desperately" attitude!

From things I have heard just today, several of our shelters are running low on supplies.  The demand is too great at this time to effectively care for those who are in need.  We're talking babies without basic necessities like diapers and formula.

I too sometimes find myself at a loss for how much I can do to help so many people.  I mean, I am a stay-at-home mom with a 2 year old at home to worry about.  But I'm driving myself crazy brainstorming things I can do with her to help.  Is it making meals?  Is it giving money?  Whatever it is I have to do something to help!  It is not only my responsibility as an American, but my hearts desire as a Christian.

I'll admit I am very independent in my political views, to the dismay of some, however; I want to challenge those who stand on the viewpoint of "Government programs to help others should be cut" to prove that there are others who will rise to this call of providing for their fellow Americans in such a time of great need.  Because some of these people have lost everything - every. single. thing. - and will need help to get back on their feet.  I hope those who gawk at these programs put their money where their mouths are.

I am burdened in my heart to be a bit of a squawking voice at this moment in time, because I don't want people to just simply forget and go about their lives without knowing the truth - our side of the country needs your help right now - in whatever way you can give - please do so.

I've created a special ad space on BaxtronLife for the rest of this year - and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to local relief efforts in our area that provide supplies to families in need.  (Through TGC Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund).   For more details please visit my sponsor page here.

Praying for all of the people suffering the results of this storm,

Reasons I Love NYC vol.1

Welcome to Link & Mingle!

Before you jump into the Link & Mingle, I just thought I'd share one of my favorite things about living in New York City - the chance encounters with exceptionally talented street performers.  In this case, Zion and I happened upon this duo on our way home from the MOPS group I lead near Columbus Circle.  Wish I knew who they were so I could give them the mad credit they deserve!  Enjoy!

The long of it is, the "Link and Mingle: Sisters in Blogging Social Media Linkup". The short is, the "Link & Mingle". Call it what you wish. :)

Coney Island Beach

Savoring Summertime

With Labor Day (and my Birthday) approaching this weekend, its time to officially wave good-bye to Summer.  As this season closes, I'm busier than ever as I plan home-pre-schooling curriculum for Zion, gear up to lead the Manhattan MOPS group, and try to implement some big changes in our diet for September.  I feel as though I'm stuck in a whirlwind at the moment, unable to escape to a place of peace...and quiet.

Quiet doesn't seem in the cards for me at this point - I've got my in-laws coming this weekend and we'll be taking a fun road trip to Vermont, Martha's Vineyard and Mystic (again - I love it so much there)!  It will definitely be an adventure considering we'll have 4 adults and a toddler packed in a car and doing 2 hours stretches of travel.  Zion will get to have her first ever Ferry ride, we'll visit a huge Farmer's Market in Vermont (hopefully stocking up on delicious Maple syrup).  I can promise one thing - it won't be quiet but it will definitely be a fantastic adventure!
When I look back on this Summer it has been one of the most busy and stressful I have ever had.  A lot of days I haven't had the true joy that I usually feel when it comes to this time of year.  We've made some sacrifice-: Jerry decided to study and take his CPA exam (effectively sucking every last minute of downtime away to studying), and I've done some major learning about God's plan for my life: hint - it's not running a blogging business.

At the same time, I have had some of the best moments this Summer - and this adventure to Coney Island Beach with Zion was one of the biggest highlights.  We just had the best time together - from playing in the sand, to floating in the waves, experiencing the thrill of an amusement park for the first time, enjoying Nathan's on the boardwalk, and delicious Ice Cream - everything was just wonderful.  It is a day that I will forever treasure in my heart.  Zion was just so happy - the entire day!

What are some of your favorite memories from this summer?  I asked a few of my lovelies to share theirs with me as we collectively move forward into Fall.  :)  I really love what they shared.

Have a favorite Summer memory you want to share with me?

Organic Mami + Giveaway

From City Corporate to Suburb Mama

Hey lovelies! I'm so happy to be guest posting for Courtney while she's away! Courtney is a dear friend  both online and offline! I'm so incredibly blessed to call her "friend" and so thankful that our kiddos love to play together and while they do, we get to hang out!

Today, I'd love to share a little passion of mine...pursuing a holistic approach to our family's health. You could even call me crunchy if you want! ;) This journey started last year, when our youngest son developed severe eczema. While the steroid creams and antibiotic creams were working, as soon as I stopped applying them, his eczema would return full force. It was so frustrating and I quickly realized I was only treating a symptom, not the root issue. That began our search to better understand our bodies, food and how they relate to each other as well as more holistic approaches to soothing and treating his eczema.  If you're interested or have similar skin issues, I'd love to have you read up on it all here.

During that time, I discovered hard lotion. It's completely natural, you can pronounce all the ingredients and easily recognize their source and what they are and it's amazing stuff!! I truly believe that God provided in nature all that we need to have health and a full life. He's that amazing! And, as I started to learn and discover, I was sold on hard lotion. My only issue was that it was too hard. I had an infant who quickly became irritated as I waited for the hard lotion to soften up in my hands so that I could apply it to his skin and I realized I needed to perfect my own recipe.

This was the very beginning of Organic Mami, my etsy shop where I sell coconut lotion, lip balm and non petroleum jelly (think Vaseline and Aquaphor without the petroleum). I offer a variety of essential oils and options and it's such a joy to hear of others trying and experiencing the benefits of solid lotion for themselves. And, during the time that our son really struggled with his eczema (before we discovered all of his allergies) the lotion was the only thing that soothed the itch and relieved his dry, weepy skin.

I'm so excited to offer a some of this lotion to one of you today!
This giveaway includes 1, 4 oz. custom coconut lotion and 1, 1oz. custom coconut lip balm.

And, I'd also like to offer a 20% off discount for all of you as Courtney's readers.
Just use code BAXTRONREADER.
Thanks so much, Courtney, for having me here today! Happy Entering everyone!

Twips for my Tweeties

Meet & Tweet Twitter Hop

Lovelies - It is time that I convince you of why

you MUST simply get a twitter account.

Why Twitter?  Well, I must first say that Facebook is going to become obsolete.  Yes, I just said that (gasp!)  I know this because almost every conversation I have with people about Facebook now inevitably includes a groan or two or three.

However; TWITTER, is going to stay.  And you should get in on Twitter now for several reasons:

#1  Twitter offers bite size information:  Think about how most people tend to read newspapers - headlines that catch their eye or maybe a single image - if those two things don't get me, I'm probably not going to read the article.  Twitter is like a plethora of headline/tagline browsing without the clutter or investment.  I strongly suggest attaching images to your tweets!

#2  Twitter offers measurable results: Using certain platforms you can now track clicks on your tweets, schedule your tweets for greater visibility and interact/engage with your audience more easily than ever.  Even if you have no time to get on twitter and interact - you can still get your blog posts, instagrams and check-ins to post directly/automatically to twitter which is great for your brand and exposure.

#3 Klout - okay, so Klout does still take into account Facebook, but honestly - no matter what you are thinking about it at this point, it is the first and most successful tool to measure true online influence.  I have read articles of people with high Klout scores getting free travel perks, upgrades, vip event access, etc. just for being an influencer.  But not only that, Brands and PR Firms are going to look to your Klout score more and more to evaluate your true influence.  A big part of your Klout score comes from your Twitter activity.  Why?  Because Twitter=Boss.

Have I convinced you yet?  Go sign-up for your twitter account now, and then let's chat about it - send me a message @baxtronlife and I can walk you through it.  Make sure you link-up your shiny new account below for an instant boost in followers! <3

I heart Thursdays! I love the opportunity to meet so many new friends.
