Why Bloggers Sell Out...

I'd like to invite you into a discussion about the phenomenon of sponsored word-of-mouth advertising.  I'll start this conversation by admitting that I have fallen victim to the very thing I am about to address.   Actually, I'm not a victim but really a willing participant in a trend that until recently I hadn't given much thought about.  Yes, I too, have sold out.

Rewind about two years ago, at the start of this blog.  I created "Life with the Baxtrons" as a way of documenting, or really digitally scrapbooking my life and the life of my little family so that friends and relatives many miles away could keep up with us.  In the beginning, you'd see baby milestones posts, cute stories of trips to the park or playground and the occasional family pictures taken around New York City.  It felt good to have a little place where I could journal our memories.

I shared the link with friends and family.  And after a few months, realized, not many of them were actually interested in stopping by.  However; I began to connect with other parents online who had blogs, and started to sense a sort of community that I was a part of.  Doesn't it feel great to be a part of something!?  Especially when you join the parent club for the first time - and all the overwhelming craziness makes you feel just a slight bit better when you read that the same thing happened to this other parent blogger over here.

After a while I got bored with just writing about my little girl (don't get me wrong - I love that girl and she is still a part of many posts) and I decided it would be nice to exercise my love of writing.  I wrote about marriage, about my struggles with ptsd and even mixed in a few recipes.  I got a lot of my ideas from other bloggers, because hey, when you are new to blogging, you need that kind of inspiration.

It wasn't very long into my first year of blogging that I was invited to an event in New York City hosted by a children's brand.  I gladly and excitedly went, and was stunned at the way I was treated - like a famous person, and given over $500 worth of loot to take home with me, blog about, and giveaway. " This is what it is all about!", I thought to myself!

I mean, honestly, who doesn't love free stuff - swag - and vip events?  I don't know anyone who doesn't love that stuff.  Immediately and subconsciously my focus shifted.  I began to write for an audience and spent hours networking myself.  Knowing that my readers were mostly other parents and bloggers, and not my targeted (family and friends) I shifted my blog to a more lifestyle/family focus.  Shortly after I changed the name to BaxtronLife, which seemed short and sweet.

I started to lose sight of my voice as a writer and began posting this and that based on attracting the kinds of readers and sponsors I wanted to have.  I became an online people pleaser - and very much obsessed with statistics, traffic and engagement.  I spent endless hours neglecting my role in my family to spend time on social media, connecting with online friends, and keeping a steady amount of blog posts scheduled - so much so that I suffered from a huge burnout shortly after a year of blogging.

I would go to those big blogs and study them for hours trying to figure out what the secret was to getting to that next level.  I went to my first blog conference, BlogHer, in hopes that I would find something more to it.  In the end the focus continued to be on the immediate gratification of sponsorship, free stuff and special access.  I lost sight of myself and my voice, and instead used the influence I had gained from my networking and authority to obtain financial and material perks.

Last week after getting back from my vacation in Hawaii, I found myself having a hard time getting inspired to write again.  I desperately wanted to present the hundreds of pictures in a catchy story-telling way, but something blocked me.  Maybe it was the gloomy Anchorage weather, or just the return to reality after such an unforgettable time away.  Either way, it got me thinking about why I blog.

Somewhere between that start two years ago and wanting to share my life with family and friends, my blog took a turn (like many others) into showcasing material things.  It isn't a big leap to take, and many people are crazy driven to get there because the free stuff and pay are good.  I just feel like that our online influence as bloggers is being taken for granted, by us.  We have sold our word-of-mouth power to brands and often we become more like the two minute commercial breaks than the primetime show that should be enjoyed.

Sometimes it is painfully awkward to read through a sponsored post on a blog I love - like when you are watching a favorite TV Show and the product endorsement is so blatantly obvious - almost like they didn't even try to make it a cohesive part of the show.  (Example: MasterChef's partnership with Walmart).  And sometimes I just miss hearing the voice of my favorite bloggers, instead of their stories intermingled with products - carefully contrived to feel real, personal and believable.

It is true, I would take the recommendation of a blogger over a tv commercial any day of the week, but that doesn't mean I want to see the blogging community overrun by advertising.  Now, I know from experience that it can be financially rewarding to blog, and that blogging is a business for many.  Even for me, it is a way that I can experience some things that I wouldn't otherwise be able to put on my shopping list.

I also know that behind every blog is a person with a voice and an influence that can be used for something so much greater than the latest frozen meal, the cool new toys of the season or even the big sale this weekend at xyz store.

I just hope we don't forget that, and that we choose cautiously how we sell our influence.  And for those of us who have sold out, I hope that we will work to reclaim our voice and reconnect with the community that needs to hear it.  I know that I am ready to make a change here, and I hope you will see that as I move forward.

Do you feel like sponsored posts have overrun the blogging community?  Are you a blogger that has sold out?

Make Google your BFF

Note: This post is intended for fellow bloggers - so if you aren't one, you could probably just skip to the bottom where I introduce my new Virtual Assistant, Krystal, who will be a part of the BaxtronLife team going forward!
Oh Google!  The giant you love to hate.  But not really hate.  More like love-hate.  They are pretty much "the boss" of the internets.  And so, whenever the giant does something that we don't understand, like take away Reader (which although I have like thousands of blogs on that thing...truth be told I hardly ever read blogs that way), we all cry out and shake our fists in the air.

Then, we inevitably, quickly and eagerly, jump onto the next suggested thing, like lemmings, following blindly, without doing all the research or due diligence we owe ourselves.  Just months ago, the mention of Feedburner in the same line as the words "shutting down," sent panic driven bloggers fleeing to other feed syndication sites hoping to save their feeds from no longer working.  Fortunately, when the chaos calmed, it was realized that Feedburner was still alive and well, that one dusty function of it that was not being of optimal use had been shut down...something for developers...not really for those of us in publishing.

Lets be honest - the real fear in Google Reader shutting down is not "Oh my gosh - what program will I use to sort and read my blogs from now on", it is really a matter of "will my shiny GFC badge still work - you know, the one that says I have this many hundreds (or thousands) of readers, and brings credibility to my blog!??"  We want that number to be there, if we are honest, so people know the big deal we are.  And also so that possible sponsors can come along and say - "oh look, they have 1700 followers - people must really enjoy reading their blog, we should get them to review some free product of ours or pay them to reach that audience!"

Believe it or not, that mentality will not bring you the glorious readership of your dreams.  There is a shift happening all over - one that you would be very smart to take note of - one I've spoken about before - numbers aren't going to matter as much - engagement will.  And how is engagement measured?  Pageviews, unique visitors, and bounce rate.  Better yet, comments and email subscribers.  Look, I'm not saying numbers are completely irrelevant either, but think about the difference of having 10 engaged readers out of 100, versus 10 engaged readers out of 1000??  Think about which blog has more influence in the end?
I recognize that the new cool kid on the block is BlogLovin, and sure, I'd love for you to follow me there.  But there are so many incredible blogs that I follow - it would take me countless hours to get through one day's worth of posts on there - so I maybe get through 5% of what I follow - and it is usually like a newspaper - an image or headline grabs my attention.  My biggest concern with BlogLovin' is what it will become as it grows larger and more busy.  Don't even get me started on the 25 new BlogLovin' hops that have started since Google Reader set their resignation date.

The point of all my clearing the air here is that, though Google Reader maybe saying sayonara, that doesn't mean that the Google giant doesn't have other tricks up their sleeve.  Google is ranked number 1 internet site on the web.  They are a very progressive company that has taken their smartphone platform from being a longshot at competition with Apple to a formidable competitor.  My husband even wants to switch back to an Android phone on his next upgrade.

So, first, if you were panicking at the reader announcement, calm down - and then, start understanding how your relationship with Google impacts your blog and your sell-ability to potential sponsors and the engaged community you desperately want (need) to build with your blog.

I want to suggest that you start investigating how to optimize your blog's relationship with Google by creating a Google+ community, utilizing hangouts, and making sure your posts are shared.  Understand how getting your posts +1'd or being added to a person's circle gets your posts elevated in Page rank.  Learn how to optimize your post content to be recognized by the Google search beast.  That is how you get discovered, build a true audience and begin to create high levels of engagement.  If you aren't looking into how to do these things, you might just be another Generation Fame-Seeker, validating yourself by each empty number that your GFC widget increases by - but missing out on an experience worth far more than any giveaways or blog hops can buy.
Blog Billion, a G+ Networking Group
Before you get all offended and act as if I just insulted you, I just ask for  you to search your own motives to make sure you are not panicking unnecessarily - and if you truly do all of your blog reading from the good old G Reader, than go ahead and mourn your loss with all due respect.  But, if you have found yourself worried that you won't have a way to prove how awesome your blog is if they remove GFC, then take a deep breath and start shifting your focus away from the numbers game and onto engagement.  Challenge yourself to network the good old fashion way - by developing blogging relationships (strategically) and growing in quality content.  Like all dreams - it takes hard work, perseverance and innovation, to achieve them.

I have a great example of an up and coming blogger who is on her way to achieving great success using the skills I've mentioned.  She is one of the co-founders of the Blog Billion on Google+, and also, my new virtual assistant, Krystal.  How I was lucky enough to score this brilliant and talented lady to be a part of my team is beyond me, but I am incredibly grateful to have her.  It is my hope that over the next several weeks I can convince her to join me in doing a posting series that will challenge you to rise from awkward acquaintance status with Google, to loyal BFF status.

Krystal has two blogs that are worth mentioning - her personal blog, Krystal's Kitsch, is a lifestyle blog with fun fashion inspiration, food and gorgeous pictures too.  Her second blog, Sunny Soirees, is a wedding and event inspiration blog - and it is probably one of the best I've ever seen, I love getting her posts delivered to my email daily - you can really tell she has an eye for creative and unique events.  I'll let Krystal introduce herself to you in her own words as well:

"Hello! I'm Krystal and I'm a true Florida girl. Sunshine, beaches, beer, and lazy summers. I love baseball games, trying new food and wines, and hanging out with my kiddo and husband. I'm a social media addict (who isn't?) who is always trying to learn more about branding, design, and blogging. I also find myself drawn to funky weddings, floral arrangements, and easy DIYs. Not only do I blog about my personal life on Krystal's Kitsch, I also find the time to post pretty parties over on my weddings & events blog Sunny Soirees."

Before I leave you to ponder all I have said today, I wanted to quickly share one awesome tip Krystal shared with me about how to get a custom Google+ url.  I was always frustrated at my Google Plus profile link: [https://plus.google.com/u/0/101569722162164949828/posts] and then she told me I could create a free shortlink to direct readers to my profile.  What!? And it is so easy I don't even need to give you instructions.  Just visit gplus.to, decide on a nickname, enter it in their little box and your google+ id number in another, and voila, a short link for your Google Plus profile.  Now you can get to me with [http://gplus.to/baxtronlife] Brilliant!

I would love it if you would please give Krystal a very warm welcome to the BaxtronLife team!

Are You Sponsor-worthy? Part I

First, let me just preface my post by stating that this is my opinion, and it is based on my experiences in sponsoring others as well as being sponsored myself.  Also, this is not an article about working with companies and brands - its an article specifically addressing blog-to-blog sponsorship.

So what makes a person sponsor-worthy?   What is the best indicator that you will get your money's worth from sponsoring someone's blog?  Is it their high number of followers?  Their stats?

Reciprocity >> This is the starting point for me.  It really comes down to the Golden Rule.  I believe sincerely in the power of treating others the way I want to be treated.  I know how I want to be treated when I pay someone to advertise my blog on their blog.  I want to be treated as a customer and I want good customer service.  So when someone purchases an ad on my site, I want them to know they are valued and important to me - and that I am grateful.

Practically speaking, I do this by communicating with them in several ways:

I have a welcome email that I send out to every ad space holder - at the beginning of their month of sponsorship.  This email is gold - it is filled with what I will be doing to promote their blog (based on their level of purchase), how I will do it, and what they can expect from their partnership.  It also gives them a calendar of events and important dates for events that will be on my blog (ways for them to grow - connect - and be featured.)

I follow them on everything.  The next step for me is to follow/subscribe to their blog and/or shop, and all social media that I can find them on.  I do this because I want them to know they are on my radar.  I'm going to be looking for ways that I can promote them and will need to know where they are active online.

I visit and browse a bit.  I do a little blog-stalking to see what kinds of things the sponsor has going on, and to learn about them - you know their name, kids and hubbies names, what general area they live in -etc.  I also note their size, niche if they have one and general posting rate.  Basically I try to get to know a little about them.  Plus, I need to make sure they are not a crazy phishing site or adult site or some other nonsense.

Relationship >> This is the heart of it all.  To me sponsorship is more accurately termed partnership.  In a sponsorship I am seeking funds to help me reach my goals.  In a partnership I am seeking funds to help us meet our goals.  Feel the difference?  When it comes down to it, the more I get involved in blogging the less time I have to read a ton of other blogs- so when someone sponsors my blog - they are going to be one of my regular reads.

It makes sense that I would build a relationship with that person - as I am often connecting with them over the length of their ad.  I'm not expecting to become BFF's with everyone who buys ad space but I do think that a big part of my reason for blogging is the community aspect.  So, to conclude this point - building relationships through sponsorship/partnership, being friendly essentially, is a key component to being sponsor-worthy.

Reputation >>  This is a big deal too!  Just like in your real life, your reputation matters.  It is especially true in blogging where a negative encounter can leave heavy repercussions.  Read: Treat your (sponsors) customers like the gold they are! They are precious and their positive or negative testimony of sponsoring you can spread easily through their dm's and private emails!  I know this firsthand because I've had others share with me frustrations with blogs they've sponsored.

A good idea is to under promise and over deliver!  Anytime I have gotten more than what I paid for, I've been a happy customer.  Well, I can think of exceptions to that but they have nothing to do with blogging.  Definitely offer something beyond just ad space - and then follow through always - go above and beyond often!

I believe if you keep these three R's in mind you will have the foundation set for being sponsor-worthy!

Stay tuned for more practical tips on sponsorship!  Have a specific question you want answered?  I'm collecting a bunch for an upcoming vlog, send me an email and I'll make sure I answer yours!

The Pretty Physicist

Meet Jessica

Tell us about you >>>
I am a twenty-something physicist, working as an engineer at a battery company. I went to college with all guys, and I work with all guys, so blogging is my link to my girly side. My mantra in everything that I do is: Who says smart can't be pretty? It's something I wish I had realized back in high school, back when I thought it wasn't cool to be smart. I love to read, shop, cook, and I love all things Hello Kitty.

Tell us about your family >>> I live with my husband of 5 1/2 years in south central PA. My husband works in IT at a local university. We have 4 cats - Callie, Mittens, Autumn, and Einstein. Hopefully in the next year or so, we'll be adding a human baby to the mix (after my upcoming surgery).

Tell us about your blog >>> I blog about everything - from cooking to reading to my life in general. My blog is my outlet for everything going through my head, so it is a lot of randomness. I am 100% myself, and I think I'm pretty entertaining - at least I hope I am!

Anything else you want to share >>> I have 4 stress fractures in my lumbar spine from an old gymnastics injury. I've had this pain for about 14+ years. It is finally going to be repaired with surgery in the beginning of October. Once my surgery is over and I start recovery, I will start to feature fitness more on my blog once I am allowed to do things again (and they aren't painful). One of the first things I plan to do is to run a 5K!
