{Outside the Box}

I am by no means a crafty lady, but occasionally I do like to try things that stretch me outside my comfort zone.  I've really enjoyed seeing gallery wall ideas on Pinterest, and other people's blogs, as well as in homes of some friends in my neighborhood.  So I finally decided to pull out my craft supplies and attempt one myself…see how I did it, today on Imprintalish!

The Weekly Wrap {1.14.12}

 We took a little trip to the bookstore to get Zion a new book.  While there I ended up finding several books I'd like to read, and walked away with one that is helping me a lot already!

 Started eating a lot more healthy this week, thank you Trader Joe's for making it easy!

 Zion got to sit on her Princess couch and eat, a big girl privilege in our house.

Another beautiful scene in our neighborhood as we approached home after a walk.

Zion took "Bear" to the playground in her mini-stroller…she was so happy to have it outside.

"Bear" had to swing with her as well.

Even though we missed Jerry while he was away in Atlanta this week for work, we had a beautiful week.

How was your week?

Breaking Bad

Let me just say that I LOVE my daughter…with all of my heart.  The past couple of days have been so trying with her though.  She is quickly approaching the 18 month mark and already we are dealing with extreme boundary testing…she doesn't have to wait for two…she is already there.

I almost had a breakdown myself this morning after the 4th time-out for the same reason, all within 10 minutes time.  I couldn't help feeling like a failure as a parent.  I know what the "professionals" say about disciplining your child, how to cope with tantrums, etc., but when you are doing those things and your precious and obedient daughter has seemingly transformed into one that thrives on trouble, its incredibly discouraging.

Luckily, after praying, I did what every parent in this situation does…poured myself a shot of whiskey called my older sister for guidance.  Thankfully, she picked up the call, and gave me encouragement, reminding me to hold firm to the boundaries we've established and continue to reinforce them.  She reminded me to stay stoic during discipline because any kind of emotional reaction on my part will reinforce the behavior, and lastly, she reminded me that this too shall pass.

I took a deep breath and decided she was right.  Then I put Zion down for her nap, began my daily reading of blogs I follow and came across this post here, which led me to read this blog.  Immediate perspective gained.  As I sat, crying my eyes out, I realized how small these troubles of mine actually are.  I realized that tantrums or not, I am blessed to have this day with my daughter.

God is so faithful to show up and remind me, during the difficulties of every day life, that things could be worse and my focus should always be on the blessing each day brings, with very little time focused on the momentary troubles.

I'd Loaf A Slice of Bread!

What exactly is that you are looking at?  Probably a huge mess about to be made, but hopefully not!

I am about to embark on a strange journey into the currently unknown (to me) realm of good, old fashioned bread-making.  This is definitely something I've been wanting to do for a while, but had no idea where to begin.  That is, until my very sweet friend Kristina gave me the confidence boost and inspiration to go ahead and give it a shot, by posting this simple recipe for a sourdough starter.

I didn't even know what a starter was until I read her post, well, with the exception of the friendship breads I used to receive during my short stay in Louisiana a couple of years ago!

I don't actually have any recipes picked out to use after my starter gets ripe (is that what you even call it? I have no idea!), so I figure I have a few days to come up with something while its doing its thing.  I am hoping to have some fresh baked bread for this weekend to share with Jerry's parents who will be visiting...perhaps I am being too ambitious.  We'll see!

Do you have any good sourdough recipes?

Top 5: October 2011 Events

October 2011
Oh October, the month where days turn a little darker, a little colder and remind me how very few of them are left in the year!!  Looking forward to:

1.  Date Night! I am slightly embarrassed to admit that Jerry and I have not been out for a date in many months.  That is all about to change!  We have a sitter booked for the evening and will be heading out for a little romance - all a surprise to me at this point.  Can't wait to follow up with a post for that night!

2.  Mom's Group! I volunteered to host a mom's group (sans kids) on Thursday evenings (bi-weekly) starting on the 6th.  I am not only excited to dig into another meaningful study of God's word, but to reconnect with some ladies I have not seen for most of the Summer.

3.  Family Visit!  My wonderful mother and father in-law will be joining us the second weekend of the month and we have already begun to plan a trip to farm for fall festivities including: apple picking, pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn mazes and petting fuzzy little farm animals.  I can't wait for Zion to experience this for the first time, and in the company of her grandparents!

4.  Fall Festivals!  New York City has a ton of kid-friendly events to celebrate fall.  While Jerry and I are not big on Halloween itself, we are fine with Zion experiencing the fun of the non-scary activities.  We'll be hoping to attend a few different events, possibly the Madison Square Park Fall Kids Fest, Halloween Parade & Pumpkin Sail and the 69th Street Halloween Block Party.

5.  Baking/Cooking with Fall Ingredients: This year I plan to make my first ever Pumpkin Pie, Fresh Spiced Apple Cider with my juicer (and the apples we pick), Pumpkin Bread, delicious roasted Acorn Squash and so much more!  Don't worry I will definitely be posting up recipes as often as I can!

What are your plans for October?  What do you love about Fall?

Developing a Theology of Homemaking

Image from TheWayEverlasting.com

A few weeks ago during a message series called, "Joining God in the Renewal of All Things", our Pastor Jon Tyson spoke on being on the "Redemptive Edge" of your industry.  A key example of what he meant by that statement was his description of a common misconception of how we can bring change to our very broken and corrupt world.

Pastor Tyson gave the example of placing a strong Christian in a "CEO" type position at a major cable company in order to create lasting change in broadcasting and programming.  He refuted this idea by stating that even if that were to happen, any major changes would be usurped by the demand of the masses for the very material we would want removed.  It wouldn't take long before the board of directors would send the Christian CEO packing.

Instead, he suggested, that same Christian could get thoroughly invested in the philanthropy oriented area of the company, where he could offer suggestions where large amounts of profit could actually be used to do good in the world, therefore redeeming it for the Glory of God.
